Helpful Hints: Making a Character « Thread Started on May 23, 2009, 1:43am »
Making a Character:
Making a character is one of the most basic requirements for this site. When a new person joins we are able to tell a lot about them by their character application. Remember, if you're new to the site your character application is the first judge of your writing that we get, as well as your cooperation and skill.
Grammar, Spelling, and Mechanics: These are probably the most important things when making a new character. Take your time with the character sheet; it's a reflection of your talent as a writer.
Originality: Nothing is worse than a bland, cookie cutter character. Try not to be too cliche. There are certain phrases or descriptions that will turn the staff off of your character almost immediately. Try to avoid things like "she appears cold on the outside, but her friends know she's really very kind", or anything along those lines.
Code: Get the code right, that's all there is to it. Your character will not be accepted if the code is wrong. Also, don't post unfinished character sheets.
Read: Get a background of the site before making a character. Read all the rules, all the hints, read about the general plot. All that stuff is there to help you. Know what house you want your character in? Read some of the character sheets of characters who are active in that house. Want to be an Order Member? Read the character sheets of some of the existing members.
Permission: Got a great idea for a character but need to get it cleared? The application is not the place. If you want a reserved position (such as Professor or Prefect) you must ask a staff member BEFORE posting your character application. The same thing goes for special abilities. Also, on this site, a special ability refers to something like being a metamorphmangus or something like that, not just a notable talent. If you message a staff member you have to wait for an answer or some kind of go-ahead before posting your character. We may ask you to apply just so we can get an idea of your writing ability before we make a decision, try to be flexible. Also, when picking a staff member to PM, try the one who has logged in most recently so that you can get a quicker response and so that the other staff members know that you have contacted someone.
