 Returns and Exchanges
« Thread Started on Sept 27, 2009, 11:03pm »

After her meeting with Revelin Nadeline makes her way back to the castle. She has homework to do. Nadeline makes a stop in her dormitory to retrieve her books and then heads up to the Library. She finds a table that is currently unoccupied but has room for another three people and sits down. She spreads her things out to cover the space that would otherwise belong to at least one other person. She isn't really planning on having any company.

Although, Nadeline shouldn't really plan on remaining alone. She does technically still have a boyfriend wandering around here somewhere. And she has this nagging feeling she's forgetting something....like maybe she missed dinner with said boyfriend like they do every day before his quidditch practice....Or maybe she didn't forget anything.

Nadeline shakes the idea away. She's not forgetting anything. She doesn't think she's forgetting anything....Actually, she did mean to change and she didn't do that. Nadeline had dressed up to go to Revelin's since it was technically an interview, and she was going to the Lestrange Manor, after all. You don't go over to meet a Lestrange in your school uniform. But the fact that Nadeline didn't change doesn't really bother her, so she goes back to her work.

Rhys wanders into the library after he’s done with Quidditch and spots his girlfriend almost immediately. He stops, a bit taken aback to see her wearing dressier robes instead of her school uniform, and he wonders why she’s wearing that. And if it has anything to do with her missing their dinner that night. Not that they’d had a ton to talk about aside from Quidditch since they’d come back… but Rhys hadn’t had anyone to eat with but Longbottom and the rest of the Gryffindor team, with Dylan gone. And even those blokes get old when you see them all bloody day every bloody day.

So he’s a bit disappointed to find Nadeline just sitting there as though nothing’s wrong, doing her homework. He swallows his immediate reaction, though, sliding into the seat across from her. “Hey,” he says, smiling hesitantly. “Missed you at dinner.”

Nadeline looks up, confused for a moment. She of course registers immediately then smiles at Rhys as he sits down. The mention of dinner seems to put a light on in Nadeline's head, clearly she had forgotten.

"Ooh, I'm sorry. I completely forgot." Nadeline says sympathetically. Even if she may or may not be that interested in dating Rhys anymore, she still doesn't think he deserves to be stood up. She doesn't like to leave people feeling awkward or anything like that.

Nadeline doesn't offer any further explanation that that, though. She tidies up her work area, clearly trying to continue her homework efforts without blatantly ignoring Rhys. She doesn't need to mention that it didn't slip her mind that day, it slipped her mind for the entire week as she made plans to do something today at that time and forgot to tell Rhys about it and forgot that she would be missing her usual time with him and forgot that the plans she made while she missed her plans with Rhys will cause her to miss all her plans with Rhys.

Rhys just sits there for a moment, waiting for any further explanation, but nothing is forthcoming... so he just opens his Charms book, his brow furrowed as he tries to concentrate on the words. It's not working.

He makes it about two minutes before he tries hesitantly, "So... you look pretty, tonight." Oh, crap, bad choice of words. He winces. "I mean, you always look lovely, but especially dressed up and all." Still nothing. His shoulders tense a bit. "Did you go anywhere special?" It's quite obvious at the moment that he isn't the person she'd dressed up for, nor was he important enough for her to remember to cancel their plans.

He stomps on the hurt, trying to be cool. He really wants to get closer to her again, like they'd been before the summer... With Dylan gone, he feels lonely, and he doesn't like it. So he can shove this down and act like an adult, here. Whining won't help.

Nadeline brings her gaze up from her work when Rhys speaks. She smiles a bit when she mentions that she looks nice tonight. She hadn't really even considered the "tonight" part in the way that it is expected many women will. She watches helplessly as Rhys tries to correct the situation. He reminds her a lot of herself, except even she has been getting better lately. Hanging around more with Adria and Belasco has probably caused the most progress for that, but regardless.

"I went to see about a job." Nadeline answers simply. It's clear that she's distracted, since Nadeline is usually the type to go on and on, well after the point that the listener has lost interest. She registers this, consciously, that she's probably acting rather stand-offish compared to her usual self. She tries to smile a little wider and continue in order to correct this.

"I'm going to be nannying." She explains.

"Maybe we should switch dinner to before my quidditch practices, if that's ok." Nadeline offers.

Revelin brightens a bit at that, liking that idea. The idea of not missing their dinners puts him in a better mood, and he opens his own notebook, peering down at his barely-legible notes. But then the rest of what she’d said hits him and his head snaps up. His brow furrows.

“Nannying? For who?” he asks, confused and a bit skeptical. He doesn’t know anyone at Hogwarts with a job while they’re still in school. It’s not normally done. And none of the teachers have children, so she’s almost definitely leaving school grounds for this. “Is it… do you need the money for something?” Nannying… would mean that she’d have to be at work a lot. A lot of her free time. Well, it wouldn’t even be free time, anymore. It would be… her job. They’re both already so busy with Quidditch… when will he ever see her?

Feeling the hurt feeling returning, he looks back down at his notes. “I guess that means we won’t have much time together,” he says, trying to sound neutral.

Nadeline is relieved when the two of them go back to studying. She does actually have homework to do. She doesn't get very far before Rhys interrupts again. Nadeline looks up, staring blankly for a moment after being asked who she is nannying for. She can understand why Rhys might be interested, but he's not holding up a conversation about this--he's getting suspicious and questioning her.

Before Nadeline can answer his first question, though, Rhys has another. "No, I don't need the money." Nadeline says, as if that might be a bizarre idea. She seems caught off guard by this whole topic. It's taking her a bit to figure out what exactly Rhys wants to know, or at least what she's going to answer.

"It won't really be that different from the summer." Nadeline comments, also doing her best to sound neutral.

Granted, Nadeline is aware that she didn't really make an effort to see Rhys either, but that doesn't negate her point. They don't really hang out as much as couples do. Although, that may be because they don't share as many interests as most couples do. Nadeline understands why Rhys might be clinging on to her, she can imagine being without Dylan is unusual, but he does have other friends. Nadeline looks back down to her papers. She really doesn't want to talk about this right now. She knows if they keep talking one of them will wind up with their foot in their mouth and they really shouldn't have conversations that require more than a whisper while in the Library.

It really won’t be different from the summer? They’d hardly seen each other over the summer at all! Hurt, Rhys physically recoiled back a few inches. Nadeline isn’t even looking at him, though, so she probably hadn’t even noticed, and suddenly, he sat down his quill.

Very carefully, trying to hold on to his temper, he stares at the girl he’s had a crush on since… forever. Years, he’d been in love with Nadeline Loille. Yeah, okay, he’ll give her that they hadn’t seen each other so much over the summer. But it hadn’t been a one-sided effort; neither of them had done much aside from some letters.

And now… he’s been trying to maybe rekindle what they’d had the previous year, but… she’s clearly not making it her top priority. She’d forgotten about him completely, earlier, hadn’t even told him that she’d had a job interview. That hurts, and he’s trying to get past that. But her blasé attitude about them not seeing one another… that’s becoming more difficult to try to ignore.

“Do you not want to see each other as much as we did before? I’m trying to make up for my part in the summer, but even when we’re together all I seem to do is annoy you.” She certainly seems annoyed right now. He clenches his jaw a little.

Rhys is correct, Nadeline certainly seems to be paying him little attention. She has things to think about besides him, god forbid. This homework might actually be presenting a challenge to her and therefore it requires her concentration, or maybe she just doesn't have a whole lot of conversation material. Do none of these things occur to him?

Finally, though, Nadeline sets her quill down and looks up at Rhys when she notices a bit of shifting from him. He's asking her serious questions now. The awkward kind. This seems to be some sort of trap. Nadeline looks at Rhys like she regards his question as such.

"I am annoyed right now because I have a lot of things to do and think about. I'm sorry if I seem annoyed other times, you don't annoy me. But I don't really know what you want from me. We never even talked before the day you asked me out, we don't have the same circle of friends, the only thing we talk about besides making small talk about our days and the weather is quidditch. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but it's not the stuff that you make daily conversations out of. So I'm sorry, but I don't know what else you expect."

Rhys personally doesn’t mind talking about Quidditch almost constantly. That’s the first thing that his mind chooses to respond to out of all of that. They talk about other things. Don’t they? Well, it’s not like he can go about telling her how he feels about things. She never agrees with him whenever he presents an argument about something. Hence… the weather and Quidditch.

Which apparently is not satisfactory for her. And why do they have to talk all the time? (It completely escapes him that he’s the one that keeps pushing her for a conversation at the moment.) But really, this is an important conversation, one where he’s trying to tell her that he’s upset, and how much he values the time he spends with her, and apparently… apparently what they do talk about isn’t good enough for daily conversations.

Well, fine. He’s a shitty boyfriend. He doesn’t know what else to talk about with her because… well, because every time he thinks about bringing up something that’s actually bothering him or scaring him, and there’s a lot of that since this summer, he looks over at her and she’s doing a crossword or working on homework or clearly somewhere else completely, at least in her mind. And maybe that’s his fault, too, for never taking the plunge and trying. But, his mind argues, even if it’s partially him, it’s not all him.

“I’m sorry,” he says quietly, not looking at her. He doesn’t say a word about trying to tell her other things in the past and backing off, losing his nerve. He doesn’t want to accuse her of things. Then she’d get mad, or madder, and she’d leave, and… he doesn’t want that. He doesn’t think so, anyway. “I’ve been trying. I’m just…” Scared. And she probably thinks he’s just a dumb jock because of it. But how can he change that in her mind now?

But trying isn’t good enough, apparently. She’d gone back to her work in the minute or so he’d been thinking, and now she’s not looking at him again. His jaw clenches involuntarily. “Well, daily conversations are important.” Now he looks away, putting his things back into his bag. He’ll study in the common room. “Can’t have you miss out on those.” She might be a bit upset at first, but after a day or so she won’t even notice he’s not there. “I have no doubt that you’ll find a bloke who’s not… not too scared to talk about things.” He really doesn’t. He’s holding her back, right? If she’s this bored or apathetic, he won’t be the one to tie her down. Standing quickly, he turns and walks out of the library, forcing himself not to hurry. Goddammit, he might have just broken up with the girl he’s been in love with for years, things in common or not, but he still has his pride.

Once Nadeline finished her bit she didn't want to look right at Rhys. These things are awkward. She'd turned her face back down to her work and toyed with her pen, but she didn't really do much with either. This really isn't the conversation she wants to have. Ever. Especially at the Library. Her cheeks are beginning to take on a slightly redder shade, and that's before Rhys responds.

Nadeline looks up when Rhys finally speaks. She waits as he apologizes and manages sentence fragments. She doesn't really know what to say to him. She wants to wait for him to finish his thoughts, which will probably be easier without her staring at him. She glances back down, knowing that being stared at while you're trying to think doesn't make the best conclusions of sentences come out.

When Rhys seems to be ready to finish Nadeline brings her gaze back up to him. It quickly turns confused, though. Is he being sarcastic? Nadeline isn't entirely sure what the hell Rhys is talking about. She feels like this entire conversation has been horribly mangled. This really wasn't what she was getting at, was it? Who even brought up being scared? If Nadeline thought Rhys was scared about something she would have made a point to help him with it....not....this.... Nadeline just gapes as she watches Rhys walk out of the Library.

Did Rhys just break up with her? Nadeline continues gaping for a few moments before she realizes that she's being looked at. She packs up her things and stalks out of the Library, her exit is a lot less dignified than Rhys'. Even if she knew this may have been coming, or may have even wanted it, she is still a girl and being broken up with still sucks. Nadeline hurries back to the Hufflepuff common room for the night.
